Feeling Down in the Dumps? Here’s Why

    Posted: November 7, 2014

It’s not easy for men to open up about their feelings, so they really need a sympathetic ear when they do. When you start to lose your zest for life, and you are feeling down in the dumps, you want to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through.

A lack of energy can drag you down and make you feel like you’re getting old before your time. Fear not: We’ve assembled a list of the most common causes of chronic male fatigue and what to do about them.

    You don’t get enough sleep.

This is more important than you realize. Not only does lack of sound sleep sap your energy and powers of concentration, but it can also wipe out all the positive effects of a sensible diet and exercise. Any time you get less than seven hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, you’re sleep-deprived. The solution is to stick to the same bedtime every night. If you have trouble falling asleep, try using the bedroom only for sleeping, or nursing an illness.

    You get too much sleep.

In another of life’s ironic twists, people who sleep too much suffer the same ill effects of people who sleep too little, such as lethargy, listlessness, and lack of pep. The solution to oversleeping is a high-decibel alarm clock. Indeed, people who sleep too much (more than nine hours a night) are just as prone to car crashes and workplace accidents as people who are sleep-deprived.

You’re not getting the right kind of sleep.

If you wake up feeling tired, there’s a good chance you’re not reaching the beneficial deep sleep stages that your mind needs to refresh itself. Sometimes a sleep disorder like sleep apnea is the culprit, and sometimes alcohol or sleep medications rob you of your deepest sleep cycle.

Your body is out of whack.

If you’re getting enough sleep regularly, your fatigue may be due to a hormonal imbalance that reduces the levels of testosterone in your body. Low testosterone is responsible for a host of conditions: low energy levels, reduced muscle mass, and a waning interest in sex.
