Mental Health in Men: How TRT Can Help

Posted: June 23, 2025

Men’s Health Month is drawing to a close, and while we’ve spent the past few weeks discussing physical conditions that lower men’s quality of life, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention another problem affecting men worldwide: mental health issues. At Low T Center, we have found that custom-dosed TRT aids not only with the physical symptoms of low testosterone, but often helps alleviate the mental and emotional symptoms of various mental health issues in men. From simple moodiness and irritability to anxiety, depression, and even PTSD and CPTSD symptoms, TRT can be a surprising ally in the fight against mental health issues in men.

The Mental Health Crisis in Men

Mental health issues are quiet killers in the world of men’s health. In 2023, men died by suicide 3.8 times more often than women in the United States. But why is there such a discrepancy between men and women? Experts say that due to societal expectations for men to suffer in silence, men are less likely to communicate to each other about their symptoms, less likely to seek support, and even less likely to seek treatment. When symptoms like anger, fatigue, and withdrawal from family and friends begin to appear in men’s lives, men are likely to ignore them, attributing these symptoms to tiredness or overwork. This leads to mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety advancing unchecked and affecting men’s lives, families, and careers negatively. Though society has created a stigma around mental health issues, especially where men are concerned, anyone–especially men–needs to recognize the red flag symptoms of mental health issues. Some of these include:

  • Irritability or anger that flares easily (snapping over small things)

  • Feeling emotionally numb, “off,” or disconnected

  • Persistent anxiety or a constant feeling of unease

  • Loss of motivation or drive, even for things you used to care about

  • Hopelessness or dread about the future

  • Avoiding friends, family, or activities

  • Escaping through alcohol, drugs, food, or excessive screen time

  • Withdrawing from responsibilities at work or at home

  • Changes in sleep—either insomnia or sleeping too much

  • Overworking to avoid feelings (what looks like productivity may be avoidance)

  • Unexplained fatigue, even after rest

  • Changes in appetite or weight

  • Sexual dysfunction or decreased libido

  • Headaches or stomach issues with no clear cause

  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating

While they could be attributed to a variety of conditions, these red flags, especially in combination, are enough to arouse suspicion of underlying mental health concerns in need of examination.

How Low Testosterone Affects Mental Health

Mental health conditions like depression or anxiety can have a variety of sources, but one of the common causes of emotional dysregulation is low testosterone. Hormones help balance the brain and regulate mood, and if testosterone is off balance, it can cause several chain reactions throughout the body and brain. If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, the cause may not be clinical depression or anxiety; it may stem from a case of hormone imbalance.

Indications that your mental health concerns could be caused by low T:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability/anger
  • Sexual dysfunction

Can TRT Help With Mental Illness?

While TRT is not a replacement for therapy or medication, it can be a helpful tool in alleviating symptoms of mental illness. In fact, studies have shown that testosterone replacement therapy, especially the custom-dosed method used by Low T Center and SynergenX, is often effective in reducing depressive symptoms in men, particularly when higher-dosage regimens are applied. TRT is not a one-size-fits-all quick fix for all mental health concerns, but its benefits often include improved mood, improved energy, better focus, and higher confidence, improving men’s quality of life regardless of underlying conditions. Every man’s experience is different, and TRT is no exception. But through hormone optimization, men can get back on track to living their best lives–and possibly alleviating depressive symptoms.
